In 2004, Eden Orfanos found herself in Uganda and met Falidah, a very bright, beautiful deaf mute girl. Falidah was 7 at the time. She had been abandoned by her parents and was being raised by her Grandparents who were also struggling to take care of seven other family members. Their tiny farming village on the outskirts of the Bugiri in Eastern Uganda was primitive: no running water or electricity. There were no special needs schools within a 260 mile radius. Falidah had no way to get an education or associate with other children in regular school. And Falidah wasn’t the only child facing these issues. Something had to be done.
Two years later, Ms. Orfanos returned and founded a small school with her own money. Classes were conducted in a converted storage shed adjacent to a public school. At its opening, the school serviced nine deaf mute girls and one boy afflicted with polio. Since then, the school has continued to grow with special needs children coming from other nearby villages to attend. The school has outgrown its current facility and children continue to come from far away with the hope of getting an education they are unable to get elsewhere.
